Question: I am Post Graduate in Commerce (M.Com-1998) from OU through Distance education. While I was doing this, I joined NIIT and did some computer courses (out of interest towards computers) and since 1999 I am in the IT field initially as a faculty and now working as a software programmer. I did Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDFM), though I am not interested to get into Finance, in 1999 (Parttime). I cleared my Microsoft Certified Solution Developer papers in 2000 march. I joined IGNOU MBA-HR as specialisation (my area of interest) and I cleared all the papers except submitting the project. I am even doing my MBA-Finance from IGNOU only.
My problem is that I am very less involved in software development in my present company though I am a programmer. For the past one year, I am looking into training programme activities, faculty scheduling etc. (a kind of administration). Though not enjoying, I am doing it looking at the market for IT. I feel I lost touch with computers and may not fetch IT jobs out if I am out of this company.
Please advise me sir, whether I should go for some ERP training like People soft (HRMS), SAP or Oracle Financials. If so, which one suits me best with my academic record of M.com + MBA (HR)+ PGDFM + NIIT course + my s/w experience OR shift myself from the line of Computers into another line Management (interested) or Accounts/Finance (not interested).
I am aged 27 unmarried now. Please advise sir. I am totally in dilemma. I sometime feel of quitting the job and join another where I can find software programming environment but scared of market recession and sticking to the same company. Please advise as soon as possible sir. |

Answer: Don't quit the job. That's the first rule. Plan transition.
A good way to keep in touch with software is that you may keep doing free lance software development in your free time. Another thing you could do is to teach software part time beyond your office hours. Take written permission from your employer for this to protect your job.
You may take up PeopleSoft training after you have seen the product, its features and difficulties. The problem is no one is taking freshers. SAP is implemented more than any other ERP. But it will also have the problem of freshers. You may take any training based on finances you have and the interest.
But hang on to the job. Even if you do not like, take interest and do the best lest some one harms you for doing sloppy job. |
